Preview: Chibi Robo! Zip Lash @ EGX 2015

Chibi Robo! Zip Lash is an interesting new take on the traditional 2D platformer. The protagonist is a 10cm high robot (hence a chibi robot). He interacts with the game’s various level elements using his plug wire, and it is this unique mechanic that sets the game apart. Chibi Robo’s wire can be used as a lasso, a hookshot (Zelda fans will get the reference) and an explosive, among other things. Experimenting with this unique weapon was highly enjoyable, and brought to my mind happy memories of watching the The Brave Little Toaster as a kid.

Chibi Robo

The mechanical protagonist is admittedly adorable

The colours are very bright, and the protagonist and level elements are all rendered in 3D, despite the game being played from a 2D perspective. The character designs have that sort of quirky charm you’d expect to see in a SEGA game, which is no bad thing in my opinion. As 3DS 2D platformers go you’d be hard-pressed to find one that looked better.

So there you have it. Solid 2D platforming action with a new twist. No word is known yet on the game’s longevity, but given the game’s price (£24.99 on the Nintendo Store, or £34.99 with the accompanying Amiibo figure) we’d be disappointed if it wasn’t decent.
