Preview: Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse @ EGX 2014
Take a curvy young Middle Eastern (or Sequinian if you want to be specific) lass and infuse her with Will Smith’s charisma plus Willow’s penchant for whipping hair back and fourth and you have feisty genie Shantae. As protagonists go her likability level is up there with such gaming icons as Lara Croft and a certain blue hedgehog. But I won’t let that bias me (if I did I’d rate every one of said blue hedgehog’s games full marks, which I honestly don’t!)
The EGX demo of her latest venture, side scrolling platform title Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, situates you in a Middle Eastern (oh, alright then, Sequinian) town in peril. This feeling of peril is immediately conveyed to you by the hoards of terrified citizens fleeing in the background. Not since Sonic 2 on the Megadrive has a 2D platformer managed to invoke in me such concern for the inhabitants of a tiny digital world. In the faces of those terrified, vulnerable people I could see my mother, my sister, my nieces and my nephews. And, as Dr Robotnik’s furry victims had done all those years before, they imbued me with a genuine sense of rage to defend them and right this injustice!
The level design is suitably well thought-out, and made traversing this troubled land a most pleasurable experience (despite that possibly sounding a bit messed-up of me given what I just said!). I also really enjoyed reading the dialogue, this game has a deliciously saucy sense of humour!
It’ll be of little surprise for frequent visitors to hear me announce that we here at 3DSBlessed are big Shantae fans. The team are really looking forward to play what looks set to be her biggest and best adventure yet!
